In 2010, HIV/AIDS Rate Will Decrease at under 0.3% in Residential Community

On March 2, 2010 morning, Dong Nai Department of Health held the conference to conclude the HIV/AIDS prevention target program – the program set for HIV/AIDS-suffered children healthcare and treatment in 2009 – and propose plans and targets of HIV/AIDS prevention in 2010.

    According to report by the HIV/AIDS Prevention Center, by late 2009, there were 4,936 HIV/AIDS sufferers across the province in which 1,202 died of the disease. Infected adults aged 20 to 29 occupied 57.31% while male sufferers represented 84% among them. HIV/AIDS infected 96 children. Most of the infected came from urban areas.  Bien Hoa city was the leading locality in terms of number of sufferer with 2,169, making up 43.94%, followed by Long Thanh and Long Khanh town.

    According to Ms. Vo Thi Kim Loan, director of the provincial HIV/AIDS control center, HIV/AIDS infection in Dong Nai was concentrating but  more likely to be younger, female, approaching communities and rural areas.

    In 2009, the center already provided great number of services totally supporting HIV/AIDS sufferers with long treatments; 3,504 patients were offered consultancies and HIV tests at the center; it also propagated the harm of HIV/AIDS, issued syringes and injection needles, and condoms to thousands of people; implemented the program of healthcare and treatment for mother-to-child HIV/AIDS infection.

    The conference also decided the 2010 goals that it would have HIV/AIDS rate dropped at 0.3% or less in community; step up propagation; foster healthcare and treatment; and support sufferers to join the intervention program of harm reduction and scale up treatment to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
