The project is
aimed at both developing beef cattle production to help increase the income of
farmers in these two poor communes and create a large number of premium blood
calves for a gradual replacement of the district’s current cow breeds of small
stature and changing farmers’ agricultural production practices.
Three years
after implementation, the project has created a model combining beef cattle
breeding and high-yield grass planting together. The project has the
participation of 21 households in An Vien and Doi 61 communes. It has suited an
underdeveloped economy in mountainous areas, trained four technicians in
veterinary and breeding and organized training sessions on high-yield beef
cattle breeding techniques for 120 households. These technicians and households
will be an important resource throughout the model-building process and
expansion period of the post-project production capacity. The project has bred
11 female calves and 15 male beef calves to support other local households. In
addition, Brahman bull semen has been used to inseminate 197 foundation cows in
An Vien and Doi 61 communes. Blood calves born will be selected as foundation
ones to bring out changes in the stature and quality of beef cattle.
