Diversification of mushroom species
It is
geologically in the transiting area from the Southern- Central Highland to the
Southern plain, and has
a very humid climate with plenty of rainfall.
Therefore it gathers abundant diversity of fauna and flora
typical for ecosystem of wet tropical forest, including tropical mushrooms,
especially mushroom growing on wood.
According to Associate Prof Dr. Le Xuan Tham – head
of the research entitled “Developing mushroom production on the basis of
building mushroom museum in Cat Tien National Park”, his group of researchers
identified over 300 species of Basidiomycetes and
unveiled more than 90 new species of mushroom, over 20 genera, one new family
and one new ordo of mushroom.

Moreover, the research group identified 2 new
species belong to the genera of Ganoderma and Tomophagus. There have been so far
more than 370 species determined belonging to 128 genera, 45 families, and 22
ordines. Moreover, about 160 new species of mushroom were discovered but not
classified yet. Mushrooms growing on wood account for 50% of forest wood
saprophytic species. Among 330 species determined, edible mushrooms attains high
ratio (over 30%), medicinal mushroom reaches nearly 10%, including many
poisonous ones.

This research group also established a set of
pictures about these new species of mushroom including more than 2000 digital
images. Necessary analysis of some species was also carried out in order to
prepare data for the flora of the Atlas – Cat Tien mushroom.
